How many Surayyas are needed?

One amazing case finder like Surayya can make a huge difference in the fight against avoidable blindness. How many more case finders are needed?

Case finders like Surayya are the backbone of the work we do.

We’ve made great progress in the fight against trachoma and other avoidable causes of blindness. But that wouldn’t be possible without a vast network of hard-working and dedicated individuals.

In rural communities like Zuwaira’s, case finders like Surayya go door to door, helping to identify cases and ensuring people get the treatment they need.

Our local partners recruit people in their communities who are already involved in local healthcare. They are trusted members of their community who, equipped with sanitiser and protective equipment, screen for cases of advanced trachoma or trichiasis.

Use the slider below to see the impact your gift could have to protect communities across Nigeria from trachoma.

Case finder Surayya holds a torch while examining a woman's eyes (Zuraira's) who is holding up her eyelid.
When Surayya looked at Zuwaira’s eyes, she saw clear signs of trichiasis.

By shining a light as her patient holds their eyelid, Surayya can safely examine the lashes to see if they are scraping against the cornea. If she identifies a case of trachoma, Surayya makes a note in her logbook and helps the patient get treatment.

Surayya can visit 10 households each day, offering the hope of diagnosis and treatment to people like Zuwaira who are suffering from advanced trachoma or trichiasis. Communities come in all different shapes and sizes, and some will need more volunteers than others, but they can be reached through the work of case finders like Surayya.
