How does payroll giving work?

The payroll giving scheme, or workplace giving, is an easy, flexible and tax-efficient way to give from your salary. You can sign up whether your employer pays you weekly or monthly.

A regular charity donation from your salary gives Sightsavers a steady source of income to plan ambitious projects and make a huge impact around the world.

Payroll donations are taken from your gross salary before tax, so your money will go even further. For example, if a basic-rate taxpayer sets up a £5 monthly salary donation, it will only cost them £4 a month.

The taxman makes up the difference, meaning your money goes further to support our sight-saving work.

In a year, giving £15 a month from your salary could pay for life-changing cataract surgery for a child like Shahadeb.

Benefits of donating from your salary

Simplicity

Payroll charity donations are a great choice for ease and privacy. Your employer takes your gift directly from your salary with no need to fill out long forms or provide your card details.

Flexibility

Payroll giving enables you to change or cancel your donation at any time. To take advantage of this flexible approach and make any amends, you can contact your employer’s payroll team.

Value

A gift from your salary makes your money go further. The donation comes out of your gross pay, so it costs you at least 25% less, and means more money for our life-changing work.

How will my donation help?

The regular donation from your salary will help us protect sight, fight diseases and promote the rights of people with disabilities.

At Sightsavers, we start with sight, but we don’t stop there. We work in more than 30 countries to prevent blindness and promote the rights of women, girls and people with sight loss and other disabilities. Your donation could be used to help treat eye conditions, train health workers, or make sure everyone is able to claim their human rights.

In 2022, Sightsavers helped to distribute more than 44 million treatments for river blindness, supported sight-saving cataract surgery for 451,000 patients, and provided glasses for more than 782,000 people.

But we can’t do any of it without you.

Can payroll giving save me money?

By giving to Sightsavers through your salary, your donation could cost you between 20 per cent and 45 per cent less than it would if you gave the same amount after tax was deducted. We will still receive the same amount either way, but with payroll giving, you give less and the taxman makes up the difference!

The table below shows how much some common donation amounts would cost for a basic, higher or additional rate taxpayer when taken directly from your salary. For example, if you’re a higher rate taxpayer and you give £5 a month to Sightsavers, this would cost just £3 as a gift from your salary.

This means that for less than the cost of a monthly frothy coffee, every year your donations could help Sightsavers and our partners to protect 300 families from river blindness, a painful disease which can lead to permanent sight loss.
