Now you’ve seen Inutu’s suffering, will you help?

Inutu and her brothers stand in front of some straw fences.

Trachoma is a cruel eye infection that can lead to scarring on the eyelids, causing the eyelashes to turn inwards and scrape against the eye. If left untreated, each excruciating blink can eventually lead to irreversible blindness.

For 12 year old Inutu, this constant agony was a daily reality. Despite the severe pain, she was determined to go to school. She told us that her favourite subject is English and that she one day hopes to become a teacher. But without treatment, her dream would be out of reach.

To show you the true extent of trachoma, we’ve included some photos below that you may find distressing. This is how we found Inutu and her two younger brothers when we met them in Zambia. Their symptoms are easy to spot: even Mr Ndalela, the surgeon we were travelling with, was shocked by the state of the children’s eyes. He told us he had never seen a case of trachoma this severe before.

A simple course of antibiotics from Sightsavers was all it took to prevent Inutu suffering from a life of agony and blindness. If she hadn’t received treatment in time, her sight would have been lost for good.

Inutu’s story is just one of thousands. Please, will you donate this summer and stop needless suffering and blindness for more children like Inutu?
