Got a query about the challenge? Below, you’ll find answers to some frequently asked questions.

About the challenge

Get your trainers on and make a daily walk your habit this May.

Whether you’re an armchair adventurer or a seasoned rambler, walk at least 100 miles in May and help raise vital funds for Sightsavers. Every mile you walk and pound you raise can help make a life-changing difference.

Not only will you boost your own wellbeing, but you’ll also help make a real difference by raising money which can help provide cataract operations in countries across Africa and Asia. Your donation, no matter how much, can help make a huge impact.

How to sign up

  1. Join the Facebook group. The welcoming community is where you can connect with other walkers and find inspiration if the weather is a little too ‘British’.
  2. Sign up for your free fundraising pack
  3. Create your fundraising page
  4. Grab your trainers and start fundraising!

How do I complete the challenge?

You can join the challenge after it starts on 1 May if you want to add a little more difficulty! You can also join the team and start training before May – but your miles won’t count until May comes around.

Absolutely! Take on this distance however you like – whether that’s on your own, with family and friends or even doing a joint fundraiser and splitting the miles.

You can indeed walk anywhere, the goal is to cover 100 miles in May. It can be done anywhere that is accessible to you, such as the gym, your local park, or city centre.

Absolutely! However you decide to travel the 100 miles is wonderful: walking, running, swimming or anything in between! Just change the name of your fundraiser to reflect what you’re doing and keep it updated with your progress throughout the challenge.

There are plenty of easy ways to track your progress. If you have a smartwatch or fitness tracker, you can use a fitness app or upload your progress to strava.com or mapmyfitness.com. You can also use your smartphone’s fitness app to note how far you’ve got. Our tracking sheet (pdf) is also great to note your progress.

We would love to see your progress through pictures in the Facebook group too! Please let us know how you’re getting on there.

Yes! Before the challenge launches you can download our progress tracker (pdf) ready for the challenge and fill it in to track how you’re getting on.

Not at all: 100 miles is the target, but if you can go further, please do! Every mile, and every donation, helps us to transform lives.

One hundred miles is a lot of ground to cover – it could take you from Bath to London or even a return trip to Brighton from the capital! Ideally everyone taking on the challenge will reach the goal, but it’s no problem if you don’t. We’re delighted you’ve chosen to take on the challenge: your efforts and fundraising will make a real difference to many lives.

If you ever find motivation slipping or want some tips and help to take on the challenge, visit our Facebook group for support.

Fundraising

It’s really easy to fundraise! In just a couple of clicks you can set up your JustGiving fundraiser. You can then share this with friends and family anywhere you’d like, although only those with a Facebook account can donate to Facebook fundraisers. You can find plenty of fundraising resources to help you get started here and in the Facebook group.

We suggest making your fundraising target £165 which could provide five cataract operations. We would be delighted if you raised more than this! We have advice and resources on how to fundraise in the Facebook group and on our website – but here are some main points:

  • Invite your friends by sharing your fundraiser
  • Share photos and updates from your walks!

Absolutely! If you’d like to collect donations offline, download and fill out the sponsorship form (pdf), which contains everything you need to know.

Unfortunately, we can’t accept cash donations through the post. If you have cash donations, the easiest way to send them to us is to pay them into your bank account and transfer the money to Sightsavers online via credit or debit card.

Alternatively, you can send cheques, Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) vouchers and postal orders, which should be signed, dated and made payable to Sightsavers. Include your name, address and details of your event, plus any sponsorship forms so we can collect Gift Aid payments.

Send to: Sightsavers, Bumpers Way, Bumpers Farm, Chippenham SN14 6NG or Freepost SIGHTSAVERS.

Every pound you raise can help provide cataract operations for people who might otherwise struggle to access them in countries across Africa and Asia, helping transform lives through the gift of sight. Your donation, no matter how much you choose to give, can help make a huge impact.

The easiest way would be for you to donate through the Sightsavers website.
