Sightsavers stories

“I’ve sat in a canoe to ensure people get their medication!”

Watch Agatha Aboe, Sightsavers’ global trachoma programme coordinator, as she tells brand ambassador Sunetra Sarker about her work to protect sight in Africa.

TV star and Sightsavers brand ambassador Sunetra Sarker recently took part in a virtual interview to learn more about our work to fight trachoma in Africa.

In June 2021, Sunetra presented our appeal on BBC Radio 4, which was recorded from her home. Sunetra wanted to find out about our work to tackle trachoma, which featured in the appeal, so the Sightsavers team arranged a conversation with Agatha Aboe, our global trachoma programme coordinator, who is based in Ghana.

During their half-hour chat, Sunetra learned how Sightsavers distributes trachoma treatments to hard-to-reach communities, and Agatha gave a rendition of the song that children sing when the Sightsavers team arrives. Agatha also described how many people live with the agonising pain of the disease because they believe it is a curse on their families, passing from generation to generation.

Watch the full video of their chat below.

“I believe strongly that in my lifetime, trachoma should be a thing of the past”
